ECRAAL

Research Clusters

The four research clusters that ECRAAL focuses on, are increasingly important in the Union’s strategy to become a global player and in its EU2020 Strategy in particular. All four are prominent priorities for EU funding in different forms and often interrelating priorities.

At the top of the agenda set by the March 2010 European Council is energy and the low carbon economy and this is reflected in EU research spending in energy and climate change.

Food, Agriculture and Fisheries and Biotechnology are another example, as is reflected in this theme under the Union’s 7th Framework Programme for Research (FP7). It is part of the Union’s work towards a Knowledge Based Bio-Economy (KBBE), which is designed to increase productivity and competitiveness and improve our quality of life while protecting our environment and social model.

In parallel therefore, health and life sciences continue also to be a priority under the FP7.

Finally, it is relevant to mention that the Union’s Strategic Plan for Nanotechnologies 2010 to 2015 will place nanotechnology at the heart of its innovation strategy, again key to its global agenda.
